A CRITICAL EXAMINATION OF THE IMPACT OF WORK-LIFE BALANCE ON EMPLOYEE JOB SATISFACTION IN INSURANCE COMPANIES IN CAMEROON

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Nowadays, human resources are recognized as a crucial asset for organizations, indispensable for achieving competitive advantage and organizational objectives. Proper management of this resource is essential for organizational survival. However, the effective management of human resources can be pivotal in ensuring the commitment and involvement of employees, which in turn significantly impacts organizational performance (Dissanayaka and Hussain Ali, 2018). Opatha (2022) highlighted the importance of employee performance in executing job tasks, duties, and responsibilities, while Velnampy (2018) emphasized the role of motivation in performance, which is influenced by both capacity for work and willingness to work. However, the increasing demands of the office have made it more challenging to strike a balance between work and personal life. The idea of work-life balance is complex and includes balancing the demands of professional life with those of personal life, including family, friends, health, and spiritual growth (Bano & Wajidi , 2021). Nevertheless, achieving work-life balance is crucial in contemporary times due to demographic, technological, and environmental changes, alongside shifts in individual expectations and aspirations (Baral and Bhargava, 2020). According to Eby et al., (2018), work-life balance not only affects employee attitudes, behaviors, and wellbeing but also organizational effectiveness. This balance is particularly relevant to employees in Douala, where numerous individuals are employed in insurance companies, both in the public and private sectors in Cameroon.

Conceptually, work-life balance refers to the integration of work and personal life responsibilities, facilitated by initiatives aimed at creating a more supportive and flexible work environment (Eichler and Matthews, 2021). It entails ensuring that policies afford employees considerable control over their lives and employing flexible work practices to meet both business and employee needs. Acoording to Dissanayaka and Hussain Ali, (2018), the term ‘work-balance’ is commonly used to describe the equilibrium between work and non-work responsibilities, signifying that this balance aligns with individual preferences and circumstances. Therefore, a survey will be conducted to critically examine the impact of work-life balance on employee job satisfaction in insurance companies in Cameroon.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

In recent years, achieving a balance between work and personal life has become increasingly difficult due to mounting pressures in the workplace. Recognizing the impact of today's fast-paced work environments, there's been a surge in studies examining work-life balance on a global scale (Akeem, 2019). In Cameroon, many prioritize their careers, yet younger employees are embracing the concept of balancing work with personal life, seeking to delineate between the two. However, for some, achieving this balance seems unattainable, particularly in light of their circumstances, with older employees often prioritizing work demands (Žnidaršič & Marič, 2021). Notably, gender also plays a role in Cameroonian work-life balance due to traditional gender roles, with men concerned about providing for their families and women juggling work with household and childcare responsibilities ( Ejlertsson et al.,2021). Hence, it is in the light of these that the study seeks to critically examine the impact of work-life balance on employee job satisfaction in insurance companies in Cameroon.
