ASSESSING THE IMPACT OF TEAMWORK ON ORGANIZATIONAL PERFORMANCE IN CAMEROON

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

In recent years, the significance of human capital and its impact on organizational performance has become increasingly evident. This underscores the crucial role human capital plays in determining overall organizational success (Mohsin & James, 2019). Effective management of human capital, particularly in terms of training and development, can lead to substantial gains in revenue and contribute to enhancing various aspects of organizational dynamics such as employee commitment, involvement in decision-making processes, and fostering teamwork.

Teamwork is the collaborative effort towards a shared vision, acting as a catalyst for ordinary individuals to achieve extraordinary results. It is recognized widely as a positive force, collective action through teamwork is essential for the success of any organization or institution(Ooko & Odundo,2018). However, teams empower individuals, allowing them to benefit from cooperative work and achieve more together than they could individually. Also, collaborating with others fosters a deeper understanding of the significance of teamwork and how the organization operates, promoting a culture of success through collaboration. Without teamwork, endeavors such as building homes, sustaining governments, and competing in the market become arduous, leading to diminished inspiration among individuals (Husain, 2021). Wageman (2019) emphasizes that teamwork within a company is paramount for achieving quality and efficiency, playing a crucial role in managing economic growth and ensuring organizational success as per the objectives set by top management. However, a key outcome of adept human capital management is the cultivation of employee organizational commitment, which yields several positive business outcomes including reduced absenteeism and turnover rates, improved behavior, greater workforce stability, and enhanced overall organizational performance (Shirouyehzad & Tavakoli, 2018). Furthermore, Steiner (2018) highlights that teams and teamwork have long been established concepts, with companies like Procter and Gamble and Botany incorporating them into their operations for years. However, it was in the 1980s that industries such as manufacturing and automotive began to adopt a new team-oriented approach, particularly in response to the competitive threat posed by Japanese companies gaining market share. Brown et al. (2018) observed that managers recognized the extensive body of research demonstrating that teams could transcend traditional corporate structures, enabling quick and efficient decision-making. They emphasized the necessity of teams for the restructuring and re-engineering processes of the future, citing examples where simple changes such as soliciting input and feedback from workers on the production line led to significant improvements.

Therefore, it is imperative for companies to promote teamwork to gain a competitive edge, as it serves as the foundation for generating new ideas. From the employees' perspective, teamwork transcends job descriptions, involving collaboration with a broader group of individuals. The essence of teamwork lies in the distribution of workload, breaking it down into manageable pieces for everyone to contribute. The lack of adequate teamwork among employees within an organization can lead to regressive development, ultimately impacting the organization's performance negatively. Additionally, substantial financial losses occur due to deficiencies in teamwork, depleting the organization's already limited resources and impeding its overall development. Therefore, a survey will be conducted in order to assess the impact of teamwork on organizational performance in Cameroon.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Teamwork plays a vital role in fostering workplace democracy, facilitating knowledge exchange, inspiring innovation and creativity, and enabling effective decision-making and networking (Jalal & Putri, 2018). It involves the formation of teams that collaborate cohesively toward achieving organizational objectives. Through teamwork, organizational cohesion and integration are enhanced, leading to greater synchronization of efforts among employees and ultimately resulting in increased productivity. However, poor implementation of teamwork within organizations has been observed to negatively impact overall employee output in corporations. Hersey (2017) emphasizes the significance of teamwork in companies for improved output and stronger interpersonal bonds among personnel. Hence, it is in the light of these that the study seeks to assess the impact of teamwork on organizational performance in Cameroon.
