INTRODUCTION

Background of the study 

Sewage disposal management is a crucial component of urban infrastructure that has substantial economic implications for both communities and governments. The maintenance of public health and environmental quality, as well as the promotion of economic stability and growth, are contingent upon the effective management of sewerage systems. In order to safeguard water resources, prevent disease outbreaks, and preserve urban and rural infrastructure, it is imperative to implement efficient effluent disposal systems.

By minimising the prevalence of waterborne diseases and associated healthcare costs, proper sewage disposal management can result in substantial economic benefits. The risk of disease outbreaks is reduced when sewage systems are managed proficiently, resulting in increased productivity and reduced healthcare expenditures. Momo and Nkeng (2023) conducted a study that demonstrated that countries that invest in contemporary sanitation infrastructure experience substantial reductions in healthcare expenses as a result of reduced prevalence of diseases like cholera and typhoid fever. This not only enhances public health but also contributes to economic stability by alleviating the economic burden on healthcare systems.

Conversely, inadequate sewerage management can result in severe economic repercussions. Environmental contamination is frequently the consequence of inadequately maintained sewage systems, which can have a detrimental impact on property values and discourage investment. Long-term environmental degradation can result from contaminated water sources and soil contamination caused by untreated sewage, which can have a negative impact on local economies and agricultural productivity. Ngwa et al. (2023) emphasise that regions with inadequate sewerage management frequently encounter diminished property values and increased expenses associated with environmental contamination cleanup.

Furthermore, economic planning is significantly influenced by the expense of establishing and operating sewerage disposal systems. The financial burden can be significantly exacerbated by the substantial initial investment necessary to construct sewage infrastructure, as well as the continual maintenance costs. Nevertheless, the long-term economic benefits of enhanced sanitation must be considered in conjunction with these expenses. Nkuo-Akenji et al. (2023) contend that the long-term economic benefits, such as enhanced public health and environmental conditions, frequently surpass the high initial costs of effluent management.

Additionally, the creation of employment opportunities and the stimulation of local economies can be facilitated by the implementation of effective sewage management, which in turn can contribute to economic development. Skilled labour is necessary for the construction, operation, and maintenance of sewerage systems, which in turn contributes to economic growth and job creation. Investments in sewage infrastructure can create employment opportunities in a variety of sectors, such as engineering, construction, and refuse management, according to Afolabi et al. (2023). Consequently, these investments can support local economies.

 Statement of the problem

The economic implications of sewage disposal management are a critical concern that affects both developed and developing regions globally. Public health, environmental sustainability, and overall economic development are all significantly impacted by inefficient sewage management systems, which result in significant economic burdens. The financial burden of healthcare, environmental cleanup, and infrastructure maintenance can be substantial, and public and private resources can be considerably strained as a result of inadequate sewage disposal systems.

The economic consequences of inadequate sewage management are severe in numerous regions, particularly in developing countries. For example, the transmission of waterborne diseases, including dysentery, typhoid fever, and cholera, can result from inadequate sewerage disposal. These maladies result in substantial healthcare expenses, such as treatment expenses and productivity losses as a result of illness, as per the World Health Organisation (2022). The economic burden on healthcare systems is further exacerbated in regions where access to medical services is restricted, which further strains already constrained healthcare budgets (Ngwa et al., 2023).

Furthermore, the economic repercussions of inadequate sewerage management are substantial, as is the case with environmental degradation. Aquatic ecosystems and water quality are both impacted by the contamination of water bodies by untreated effluent. Costs associated with water purification and environmental cleanup are substantial. A study conducted by Momo and Nkeng (2023) emphasises that the degradation of water resources requires costly remediation efforts and affects sectors that depend on pure water, among them agriculture and tourism. This environmental damage not only results in direct financial expenditures but also reduces the economic potential of the affected regions.

Additionally, the economic consequences encompass infrastructure development and maintenance. Increased expenditures on emergency interventions and temporary solutions may result from the absence of effective sanitation systems. Nkuo-Akenji et al. (2023) have observed that substantial investment is necessary to establish and sustain a resilient sanitation infrastructure. Inadequate sewage systems frequently require costly repairs and enhancements, which can impede overall economic progress and divert funds from other critical development projects. It is against this backdrop that this study will be carrying out an in-depth study on the economic impact of sewage disposal management in Cameroon.

1.3 Objectives of the Study 

The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the economic impact of sewage disposal management in Cameroon. Specifically the study seeks to:

To analyze the economic benefits of effective sewage disposal management in Cameroon.

To assess the economic losses associated with inadequate sewage management in Cameroon.

To identify the financial barriers and challenges faced by communities and authorities in implementing effective sewage disposal management practices in Cameroon.

To propose policy recommendations and strategies for optimizing sewage disposal management to maximize economic benefits and reduce costs in Cameroon.

1.4 Research Questions

The following research questions will be answered in this study:

What are the economic benefits of effective sewage disposal management in Cameroon?

What are the economic losses associated with inadequate sewage management in Cameroon?

What are the financial barriers and challenges faced by communities and authorities in implementing effective sewage disposal management practices in Cameroon?

What are the policy recommendations and strategies for optimizing sewage disposal management to maximize economic benefits and reduce costs in Cameroon?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The stated hypothesis will validate this study:

Ho1: There are no significant economic impact of sewage disposal management in Cameroon.

Ha1: There are significant economic impact of sewage disposal management in Cameroon.

1.6 Significance of the study

Policymakers can develop and implement effective sanitation policies and regulations by comprehending the economic implications of sewage management. The research will furnish data to substantiate policy decisions, thereby guaranteeing that resources are allocated effectively to resolve effluent management challenges.

The research will also delve deeper into the ways in which effective sewage management contributes to the stability and development of the local economy.

The research will also contribute to empirical knowledge on sewage disposal management and can be used by future researchers and academicians.

1.7 Scope of the study

The study aims to carry out an in-depth study on the economic impact of sewage disposal management in Cameroon. Empirically, this study assesses the economic benefits of effective sewage disposal management in Cameroon, the economic losses associated with inadequate sewage management in Cameroon, the financial barriers and challenges faced by communities and authorities in implementing effective sewage disposal management practices in Cameroon and policy recommendations and strategies for optimizing sewage disposal management to maximize economic benefits and reduce costs in Cameroon.

1.8 Limitation of the study

Like in every human endeavour, the researchers encountered slight constraints while carrying out the study. The significant constraint was the scanty literature on the subject owing that it is a new discourse thus the researcher incurred more financial expenses and much time was required in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature, or information and in the process of data collection, which is why the researcher resorted to a limited choice of sample size. Additionally, the researcher will simultaneously engage in this study with other academic work. However in spite of the constraint all these constraint were downplayed to give the best.

1.9 Definition of terms

Sewage: Sewage is the waste matter, usually consisting of water, human waste, and other materials, that is carried away from homes, businesses, and other buildings through pipes to be treated or disposed of.

Sewage disposal: Sewage disposal is the process of removing and treating waste matter from sewage to prevent pollution and protect public health. This typically involves collecting sewage through pipes, treating it at a treatment facility, and then safely releasing or recycling the treated water.
